Just like any other motor sports discipline, the off-roading has been evolving very intensely. Thanks to excellent engineers, mechanics and good off-road conditions, the constructions developed 10 years ago which seemed to mark the limit of off-roading possibilities, today cannot compete against state-of-the-art developments. In the EXTREME class stock cars can hardly stand any chance of competing against self-made cars with no body at all. Such development could not have been avoided, however, it is responsible for a certain financial and technical restriction. Namely, some off-roading enthusiasts who do not have a budget of a few hundred thousand zlotys, were automatically excluded from competition. Hence we came up with the idea of developing PO.GR.OMM.CA especially for those people.

The idea
We were thinking very hard what can be done to maximally reduce the costs of the construction of a modified off-road vehicle [zmota] that can compete against current typical extreme class vehicles. We decided that the substantial majority of competitors have the know-how and technical skills and could piece that car on their own. They would just need a frame, like a roll-cage which cannot be home-made in a professional manner, and a “giver” being a source of mechanical parts. We chose Nissan Patrol for several reasons to be the giver of mechanical parts, mostly including its excellent off-roading opinions, the price and the good availability of spare parts. Now we just had to design the roll-cage that meets all the assumptions made beforehand, i.e.:
- it will have all possible mounts required by Nissan Patrol components,
- it will be as light as possible given the required security standards,
- it will be as low as possible (adjusted to the driver’s and pilot’s height),
- it will be recurrent which will allow to manufacture additional accessories and replacement of its elements in case of damage.
Compatibility with Nissan Patrol
Building the modified off-road vehicle [zmot] will always be associated with weeks of searching for parts of different cars, not always off-road vehicles, and trying to adjust them to a concept we have come up with before. Usually finding a part is just the beginning followed by more or less successful fitting of a given design. It becomes a serious limitation to an off-roader who does not have a resourceful garage and access to many spare parts, which practically disqualifies him right at the start.
The idea behind the construction of PO.GR.OMM.CA is to wholly rely on mechanical parts originating from one source being an off-road vehicle. That’s not all! No modifications of those parts are expected. This is not only to shorten the construction time but to simplify it and, more importantly, prevent a mistake in “garage” conditions. Later at the stage of actually using the vehicle, thanks to such solution it will be easy to fix it during a race. For example, towing a car carrier with stock Nissan-based PO.GR.OMM.CA, we have a full package of spare parts ready to be quickly transferred and installed.
This is viable as all possible technical elements such as an engine, a gearbox, rockers arms, bridges, transmission etc. originating from Y60 and Y61 can be mounted directly onto the cage. It has all the handles placed at the same locations and distances as the Nissan roll-cage yielding great benefits. Firstly, buying Nissan Patrol we have a 100% arsenal of parts to build PO.GR.OMM.CA. Secondly and probably more importantly, repairing the vehicle we always know which car parts we must order (and that’s not all! We can install them without any modifications).

OMM also plans to develop mounts for other off-road vehicle models. A design has already been created for Mitsubishi Pajero, Wrangler Rubicon and Toyota Land Cruiser subassemblies. Moreover frame side members of the roll-cage are placed parallel and close to each other which can be excellently adapted for screwed suspension.
Weight
There is no need to explainthe importance of the vehicle’s weight in off-road conditions. PO.GR.OMM.CA’s roll-cage was minimized, however, its security and endurance standards were maximized. The roll-cage has no ells, all bendings are CNC-made with the use of a precise weldless pipe. Nissan Patrol’s original frame was replaced with pipe side frame members (preventing the increase of its mass by picking up mud inside the frame). The application of CNC-bent pipes only (the use of ells was completely done away with) also considerably improved the roll-cage’s weight and rigidity*.
The basic cage is a minimum which can be developed or strengthened at the discretion of its future user. As per the design, double frame side members can be optionally assembled as well as additional door and roof braces etc.
The weight distribution between the axles is not a matter of chance, either. A protruding front axle caused the engine and the gearbox to be “slid in” between the beams. For an additional weight down of the back, the driver’s and pilot’s seats were practically levelled with back axles. Also a radiator, car batteries and hoists are at the back of the car perfectly counterbalancing the engine’s weight. The mass distribution is nearly perfect 50%-50%.

Height
At the designing stage, apart from the vehicle’s weight, the maximal reduction of the vehicle’s total height was important. It was assumed at the designing stage that the total vehicle height must not exceed 107 cm, with the use of 35-inch wheels and 4-inch suspension. Thanks to advanced designing software and the possibility of placing the driver’s figure in the designed cage, we had a chance to manipulate the roll-cage proportions. As a result it was possible to fit the driver inside the cage along with all the required devices, leave some reasonable space overhead together with some stomach clearance without exceeding the presumed height (or even stay below that). Thanks to using the same wheels and suspension the stock Patrol is nearly half a meter taller than PO.GR.OMM.CA!
The combination of low height and weight creates the effect of a center of gravity located very low which will be appreciated off-road by anyone who has at least once tried to drive up a steep dam or “stick to a tree” on a steep field.
Recurrence
Roll-cages are made with CNC-benders and milled at pervading spots with CNC machines. As a result the elements can fit perfectly and are recurrent. Also when a given cage element is damaged, it can be purchased and replaced which is a benefit. Besides OMM plans to develop additional elements such as dedicated seats, engine tanks, integrated pedals etc. A universal roll-cage size allows to purchase such elements without the fear that they will not fit.
The use of precise seamless pipes to build PO.GR.OMM.CA’s roll-cage also yields benefits such as easy repair and manufacturing quality. Even serious cage damage will not necessitate the purchase of a new one. It is possible for the damaged part to be cut out and a new element to be ordered. OMM ships the ordered element together with sleeves on which it can be precisely mounted prior to welding. On request it is also possible to design and manufacture extra elements of the roll-cage accessories.
Benefits
There will certainly be as many views and opinion regarding the construction of the modified off-road vehicle [zmota] based on the roll-cage developed by OMM as its users and off-roaders.Objectively speaking, we are bound to find many advantages, among others, the possibility of constructing the vehicle with the use of top quality parts, an excellent knowledge of the self-constructed vehicle, a speedy construction process (practically within 3-4 days it is possible to have the vehicle ready to drive), the possibility of having the vehicle finished according to one’s taste and needs and also financial capabilities. Relying on parts originating from the tested Nissan Patrol also guarantees that there will be no children diseases in regard of such designs. This is why PO.GR.OMM.CA seems to be worth considering.
